in Random Thoughts

I read something last night when I was struggling to fall asleep that said you’re more likely to have nightmares when you’re sleeping in cooler temperatures. It was Twitter, of course, so there was no support for this statement – probably just someone trying to mess with our heads because the weather is getting cooler. But it stuck with me because that’s the kind of thing my mind does when it’s fighting sleep. Because shutting up for 7-9 hours is too much to ask.

This is what my brain has to say about this:

It’s also why I ended up reading all of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer in one sitting – one laying, if you’d like total honesty because I was reclined the entire time but no one ever says things like that. I can pretty much sum up that entire book with three words: What the fuck? Which is also how I felt about the ending of Pandemonium, which I’d finished just before that. But Mara Dyer was the kind of book that makes your skin crawl and I made the mistake of starting it at bedtime and then there was no getting out of it. If you’ve been curious about that book it’s on par with Twilight in terms of writing (I actually Googled to see if it was originally a Twilight fanfiction because it’s that similar) but the premise is interesting and creepy so borrow it, don’t buy it.

And that is how someone ends up staying up later on a Sunday night than they did the entire rest of the weekend. Dumb.

I usually rate my weekends in terms of how productive I was but this weekend all I did was relax and when I stop to think about it I feel like that should be the point of a weekend, right? Only I feel more exhausted than I did when I started so my method was definitely flawed. I napped and watched Almost Famous and read three books (the third being an old favorite, The Perks of Being a Wallflower). On Sunday I got a little wild and drove to the next county to buy gas because it used to be significantly cheaper but isn’t anymore but I did get myself a big old slushie while I was there – this one was Pepsi and blue raspberry which, I discovered, tastes like drinking cotton candy. So that’s on my no-fly list from now on when drinking slushies. Which is not as often as I’d like it to be but more often than it should be.

Have I mentioned yet that I’ll be turning 88 in November instead of 28? Seems like a good time to bring that up.

You know what else I should bring up? That my birthday is on Election Day this year. It happened the year I was born too. How’s that for some random Kate trivia?

Other random Kate trivia – every fall/winter I have trouble sleeping (see above). Every year I forget this and act like it’s a huge surprise and problem. Let’s hope this year is different, okay?

How was your weekend? Are you a productive weekend person or a relaxing weekend person?

I’m jealous that you finished 3 books this weekend! I have been seriously slacking on my reading lately. I have 8 more books to meet my goal of 25 books in 2012…I’m getting nervous about getting it done!

GoodReads told me today that I’m 33 books behind on my goal for this year and I’m 99% sure I will not make it. I was a little too ambitious with my reading goal, haha! If only blog posts counted as books we’d be all set, right?

My birthday is about a week later than yours and I was so pissed that I couldn’t vote in the election on my 18th birthday because I was born a week too late. I kind of saw the ending to Pandemonium coming (I’d just reread Delirium and notice that *spoiler redacted* was never actually confirmed dead, which gave it away for me. I actually had The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer on my to-read list, so I’ll have to do that. Have you read Gone Girl yet? That’s a real WTF, although I also thought that twist was telegraphed (or I’m just really sick in the head).

So this and your next two comments got spammed by my blog. No idea why but I’m glad I checked my spam before I emptied it. Yikes! : (

I’ll add Gone Girl to my list! I started reading the sequel to Wither last night, did you get into those books at all? I loved Wither but Fever is not meeting my standards. Maybe I just expect too much from books??

I cannot figure out the voter registration thing. I never changed my license to NY and the renewal date is November 2009. And October was too late for me to vote in that year’s election so…I don’t know. But at least that’s one more thing off my to-do list!!

In hilarious news, the e-mail notifying me of your reply was buried in my spam folder.

I LOVED “Wither”, but “Fever” dragged. It gets much better towards the end, but I got bored in the middle. You’ve read Divergent, right? That book was fantastic. I just finished the third “I am Number Four” book, but I’m getting bored with them. Next up is “The Maze Runner” prequel and then “Song of Achilles” for book club. I’ll let you know if they are any good. I’ve been meaning to drop you an e-mail and see how life is.
