Soundtrack of My Life - The Kate Mixes

Soundtrack of My Life

September 13, 2012

in Playlists and Mix CDs

This meme has been around for years – I first recorded it in my LiveJournal when I was in high school!  The original instructions were to put your music on shuffle and fill in the blanks. But I put in my own selections instead because I felt like it was more fun/insightful to see what I thought were the perfect songs for each occasion than to giggle over the random song iTunes pulled up. And I pulled out the lyrics that grab me most from these songs since in most cases the lyrics are the main reason I like the song.

Opening Credits:

Kate is Great, The Bouncing Souls

Remember me now cause things always change…I know I’ll never be the same

Waking Up:

If You Want Blood, AC/DC (Blame Empire Records for my love of this song)

First Day At School:

School’s Out, Alice Cooper (no joke, it was our tradition in high school)

Falling in Love:

Lost Without You, Blink 182

I’ll keep my eyes patiently focused on you

Breaking Up:

Brighter Discontent, The Submarines

But love is not these belongings
That surround me
Though there’s meaning
In the memories they hold
A breaking heart in an empty apartment
Was the loudest sound I never heard

Prom:

What Do I Do, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack (they played our prom after party, I don’t know, it’s the only song that really stands out from that night since the rest were just whatever was popular at the time)

Life’s Okay:

Buildings and Bridges, Ani DiFranco

I don’t know who you were expecting
Probably some bitch who does not budge
With eyes the size of snow
I may get pissed off sometimes,
but you seem like the type to hold a grudge
and in the end, I just let it go

Mental Breakdown:

Nobody’s Home, Avril Lavigne (Don’t roll your eyes. This was the hardest song to decide on, hands down. Most of the songs I turn to when I’m upset are really situational. But I connected with this one as a freshman in college and just haven’t ever let it go no matter how much her voice grates on me or how shamefully melodramatic the lyrics are. It works for almost any situation so…yes.)

Her feelings she hides.
Her dreams she can’t find.
She’s losing her mind.
She’s fallen behind.
She can’t find her place.
She’s losing her faith.
She’s fallen from grace.
She’s all over the place.

Driving:

A Song for Everyone, Fenix*TX

Drive all night go anywhere you wanna go
All that I want and all that I need
All I wanna know is do you wanna come with me

Flashback:

We Danced Anyway, Deana Carter (reminds me of the Warped Tour)

Summer air was heavy and sweet,
you and I on a crowded street
there was music everywhere, I can see us there…

I remember you were laughing,
we were so in love, we were so in love.
And the band played
songs that we had never heard
but we danced anyway.
We never understood the words
we just sang oh, la la la la la
and we danced anyway

Getting Back Together:

Tech Romance, Her Space Holiday

You can show up at my house
Completely unannounced
We’ll have that movie kiss we talked about
Where there are no words
Just a soft and gentle score
Our ears will ring from all the strings

Wedding:

Nothing Else Matters, Metallica (If you hear this song used at my wedding you’ll know I’m having the wedding of my dreams!)

Final Battle:

Dead Bodies Everywhere, Korn (I don’t get this prompt, unless they mean a metaphorical battle. If that’s the case – feel free to picture me staring down an array of sweets and smashing things while I try to avoid eating them or something and this song is still a good fit)

Death Scene:

Tonight and The Rest of My Life, Nina Gordon

I feel so light
This is all I wanna feel tonight

Funeral Song:

I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen, The Irish Tenors

To that dear home beyond the sea
My Kathleen shall again return.
And when thy old friends welcome thee
Thy loving heart will cease to yearn.

End Credits:

Pictures of Success, Rilo Kiley

I say I’ve got my best shoes on
I’m ready to go

So there you have it, the “soundtrack to my life.”  Now if only I could actually get someone to provide a score for the rest of the moments it would be perfect.

What song would definitely be included on your life’s soundtrack?

OH MY GOSH I LOVE THIS. I like to imagine there’s a song playing every moment of my day. My general, LIFE theme song?! “Here Comes the Boom” by POD. YES :)
