One of the “tricks” you always hear for getting your house in order and/or making it beautiful is to start with the areas no one ever sees. I generally entertain guests in my family room on my bed with tv stand so my bedroom is one of the first places that gets messy and unpleasant to be in. But I wanted my room to be somewhere restful, not somewhere I’d just look around and feel overwhelmed with things that need to be done.
No, I don’t generally love that lamp on my dresser but the dogs don’t generally love it on their crate so it lives up there because as luck would have it, that’s the only outlet that operates on the switch. I’d bemoan the lack of overhead lighting but when you see the fixtures that came with the apartment in later posts you’ll understand why I got over that with a quickness. Someday I’ll get another bedside table and move the crate but for now it’s fine. I’ll also swap out those stock photos in my collage frame (on the left) for actual pictures of people I know.
Like I mentioned yesterday, this room is dark! It doesn’t feel that way with my bright new duvet though.
When we moved this dresser, the drawers were still brown. I made myself paint it before I could put my clothes in it so I wouldn’t have to empty it later. And look at that – it’s done. Smart girl. This is how I want the dresser to look when it doesn’t need to host the lamp.
And here’s an update on everyone’s favorite project – my Ikea makeup vanity. You can see I’ve since filled it with more makeup – and more brushes. I had to add some containers and haven’t gotten all the beads for them yet. You can see my 2 Urban Decay Naked palettes, their Vice palette, their limited edition NYC palette, plus my beloved Kat Von D Sinner palette here. I should probably stop buying palettes for a while…
Here’s a fun Kate fact – did you know I collect Buddhas? I actually minored in Buddhism in college. So they’re all over the house. They also make great gifts for when you don’t know what else to get me. My two newest eyeliner experiments are in the picture below as well!
And finally, here’s the view from one window. I’ll be crossing my fingers that my quiet neighbors don’t become crazy pool partiers in the summer!
I still need to get a chair to put at my makeup table permanently and I need some better lighting for when I put my makeup on (suggestions are welcome in terms of lighting, I am no young house love). It may take a while before I stop looking at that room and seeing things I’d like to do to make it better but at least it’s organized and pretty and makes me feel like I can relax and get some rest!
More to come as I finish getting settled in…
