If I were going to be concise for once in my life, I could say it took 8 days to sell my parents house. Of course we all know that’s a gross oversimplification of what really happened because the only thing simple about selling a house is, well, the phrase “selling a house.”
It ended up taking quite a bit more time and energy than all that (I should also mention it listed twice because the first buyer backed out) but really, now that the anxiety has passed, it doesn’t seem like it was all that bad. Just uh, don’t ask me to do it again any time soon.
And so with that chapter closed, naturally another one is open. Mom spent a week partying with her friends here (no, seriously, they had something for her every single night) before the movers arrived.
I somehow got myself the thankless task of driving Mom and Dad’s two dogs to their new home, which doesn’t sound like a bad deal until you understand that I thought this was an 8 hour drive in what is basically a two seat car. Really it was 6 hours and everything was fine. I had a plan, the dogs had a different one, ultimately they won and we were all happier for it. Especially because I will never again be tricked into flying since it ends up taking just as much time.
One good part of this whole “Let’s move Mom and Dad to a new state” project is that my brother has now assumed responsibility for the care and keeping of our parents. I am confident that he’s well prepared to handle the task even if he doesn’t yet know exactly what he’s in for. He does, however, have a slightly different approach than I do and based on the texts I’ve gotten so far I have a feeling this will be an endless source of entertainment for all of us.
I spent a few days with Mom and Dad before heading back and unfortunately that just wasn’t enough time to get the house unpacked. If you’re anything like me though, you understand that the fun part of decorating and arranging things is a never-ending process so it wasn’t going to be finished but the last I saw of the place it looked mostly like this:
Give or take a few boxes, of course. I’m definitely excited to see how it looks when I’m back in September!
For now I’m happy to be back in my own home and have a little time to turn my attention to my own projects and adventures. I have a few things that I set aside until now and once I catch up from being away I’ll be able to give them the time I want. It’s looking like October is going to be my chance to finally have a real break and I could not be more excited.
