I love hearing people’s stories about their one little word for the year and how they came to find it. Last year I went through a process of picking, and it worked out really well for me. My one little word for 2017 popped into my head as I was filling up my car before church early in December. What I didn’t know at the time was that our pastor would ask us to pick our word during the worship experience that morning, so I’m totally giving God the credit for that. The more time I sit with it and think about what God is doing and asking from me at this point in my life, the more I feel like this word is a perfect fit. The word is “Release.”
A few days later, I was reading in my bible and decided to choose a scripture to accompany my word. There are quite a few, but I knew right away which one captured the essence of this word and what I’m believing for this year:
“to open eyes that are blind,
to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.” (Isaiah 42:7)
There are so many things that hold us captive in our lives – some are serious and may require professional help, like addiction or mental illness, but others are emotional patterns and bad habits that we can identify and correct on our own. For example, I really struggle with “what if” scenarios. I spend SO much time and energy on scenarios that may never happen. It’s good to think ahead and try to look at situations from different angles, but everything has a limit. So I started repeating a reminder: Stop paying interest on a debt you don’t owe. That’s all worry is, right?
As we move through 2017 I want to do a better job of correcting the patterns and habits that have the potential to hold me back. I know that I will end up setting some goals as I identify exactly what I need to do, but having an overall word or “theme” for the year means I’m able to set goals on a timeline that makes sense for the task instead of setting somewhat generic New Year’s resolutions. I hope, like last year, that by the end of the year I’ll be able to look back and see how well this word fit everything that happened throughout 2017.
I wanted to include the video of my bible journaling page for this verse and my one little word for 2017…but it’s not finished. I actually recorded the video on New Year’s day, along with a few other videos, and I’m still putting the final touches on it. Rather than hold on to this post for another month while I get around to finishing the video, I’m going to post them separately and go ahead and put my one word into practice by letting go of my need to have everything exactly right before I hit publish. But it will be the first short video I’ve managed to do in a long time so I’ll be posting that on my YouTube channel soon. Be sure you go over and subscribe so you know when it goes live!
I get to end this post by announcing my giveaway winner! If you didn’t win this time, don’t worry, I have another copy of Heartbeat to give away on my Instagram account starting next week so make sure you’re following me over there. Anyway, congratulations to Hilary! I hope this book blesses you as much as it has blessed me.
Did you pick one little word for 2017? Or are you more of a New Year’s Resolution-setting type?
